This course focuses on teaching the foundational knowledge that must be understood in order to effectively troubleshoot and diagnose issues in residential and light commercial heat pump systems.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

Emphasis will be placed on safety, modes of operation, understanding the heat pump refrigeration cycle and components, reversing valves, supplemental heat, proper airflow, the defrost cycle and types of controls, heat pump electrical components and sequence of operation, component test and diagnostic procedures, as well as assessing overall heat pump heating side system performance.

Additional topics include TXV’s and flow controls, check valves, defrost control boards, fan motors, relays, start components, electrical heat strips, as well as proper test procedures and multimeter use. Additionally, heat pump heating mode refrigerant charging will be discussed, including the correct use and understanding of manufacturer’s charging charts and service literature. Practical, real-world tips and suggestions are offered throughout the course, based on years of actual field experience.
